Months ago, I was invited by a well-known Christian web site to write an article on the topic, "Will I Ever Stop Worrying About Money?"
I still haven't written it, because I didn't want to write an article that just said, "No."
We live in a world that runs on money. It seems like if we don't have money, not only do we not have what we want, but we may not even have what we need to survive. It seems that we're doomed to always worry about money.
But wait. If that's true, we have a faith gap.
We may say and mentally agree that Jesus is Lord of all. But in practice, we hesitate to make him Lord of all that we are and all that we have. Is Jesus the Lord of our time usage? The Lord of our relationships? Of our self-worth? Our thought life? Our choices? Our finances?
If we are worried about anything, but in this case money, are we denying lordship to Christ? If Jesus is indeed Lord of our money, then why would we worry? Do we not trust God's provision? Jesus told us in Matthew 6 that our Heavenly Father knows we need sustenance but wants us to focus on daily living and on serving and experiencing God's kingdom.
I'm working on making Jesus the Lord of our family finances. I've come a long way. I've gained a lot of trust and released worry as I have seen what Jesus can and will do when I surrender control. Yet I still have my bouts of worry. I'm not a finished product.
We each must look inside ourselves and search our faith gaps. In this case, we're inspecting those places where Jesus is not yet Lord of all. May we grow in trust to hand over the bank accounts, not that we never steward our money, but we go from worrywarts to becoming executors of God's will.
