Wednesday Devotional: A House of Cards

Updated: Sep 24

Ecclesiastes 4:11-12  Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

A touching documentary on the life and family of Christopher Reeve is coming out this weekend. Named for Reeve's most famous movie role, "Super/Man" arrives in theaters on Sept. 21.

If you're not familiar with Reeve's story, he was muscular and handsome and the epitome of the Superman character he played. But he was human too, meaning that when he fell from his horse and broke his neck, Reeve became a quadriplegic for the rest of his life, which was nine years.

The documentary captures his life but also the bravery of his family. His wife, Dana, was completely dedicated to his care; however, shortly after he died, she was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and died less than two years after her husband's passing. Their twelve-year-old son went to live with friends, supported by his adult half-sister and half-brother.

One striking comment reflected how these rattled children coped without Christopher and Dana. They said something to the effect of, "We were like a house of cards. Not one of us could stand alone. But if we leaned on each other, we could stand."

This is a great analogy for how much we need each other in this life. King Solomon understood this when he wrote in Ecclesiastes how hard it is to protect and defend ourselves alone, but we can do it with each other's help.

Let us not dismiss how much we need each other. In this era where many people are willing to sacrifice relationships due to political disagreements, let us set aside differences and protect relationships. Just like the three Reeve siblings who became a cord not easily broken, let us also lean on and lean into others to help and to receive help.
