Wednesday Devotion: Glaciers Cracking in Desolation

Psalm 61:1-3 (NIV) Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe.

I have never visited a glacier; I hope to someday see for myself this wonder of nature that has shaped so many other wonders of nature.

My understanding is that glaciers can be loud, as loud as rain pounding the sea, sounding like a boom or groan, heard over long distances. But glaciers also produce soft cracking noises.

It amazes me to think that this range of sound occurs in desolation, usually far from human ears. Like the tree falling in the forest with no one present, does it make a sound?

We can wonder if anyone hears us in our desolation. Perhaps it's the sound of us softly cracking. Sometimes our breaking and pounding heart produces our version of booms and groans.

David wondered if God could hear his cries in his desolation from the ends of the earth. His heart was breaking and growing faint. He craved God's direction and protection.

Yet David had faith because God had been faithful in the past, acting as a strong tower, a place where David could be protected, no longer in the desolate wilderness.

In our desolate moments, let us cry out, softly or with loud groans, to the one who created us and loves us and knows us. May God be our strong tower, hearing us and responding when we crack like a glacier.
