Wednesday Devotion: Craving Light

John 8:12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Pitch black. I have never seen such darkness before nor since.

The guide for our third grade field trip into the cavern had taken us to the deepest point in the tour. To illustrate what a cave is really like, she turned off the lights.

I could see nothing, not even the hand in front of my face, but I knew others were around me as the cave echoed with surprised third grader sounds. I felt a brief moment of panic. I realized my return to the surface utterly depended on the guide lighting the way. I couldn't wait for her to take control and lead us out.

Similarly, I must rely on Jesus to be my guide, lighting the way through the world's darkness. Even when I can't even see my hand in front of my face, Jesus knows the way forward.

It's tempting to try to defeat the darkness ourselves. We feel like we have brought enough artificial light - candles and flashlights - to take matters into our own hands. But we should rely on Jesus instead. Not only is he the true light, but he knows how to navigate the rocks in the cave that can trip us up.

When darkness renders our own vision useless, we are wise to rely on the light of Jesus.
